crumbler:

“Rehab,” cast of Glee.

Has any pilot episode ever resonated so strongly with young people as the debut of Glee? Almost two weeks after it premiered, my friends are still talking about it. The show takes stock characters from every high school drama you’ve ever seen — the jock who sings in the shower, the sassy black girl, the gay guy — and tweaks them just enough to make the show fresh. (Jane Lynch is perfectly cast as a tyrannical cheer coach.) My favorite part of the pilot comes when the ne’er-do-well coach takes his ragtag glee club to see their crosstown rivals. He assures them that while their rivals have talent, they’ve got everything it will take them to beat them in competition. And then the curtain comes up and the rivals sing “Rehab,” and it’s pretty much the greatest performance of anything ever shown on television, and the camera cuts to the ragtag glee club, who are in various states of slack-jawed wonder / abject misery. And now you can buy that moment on iTunes. More episodes are coming in August; it can’t come quickly enough.
