The quintessential indie feel of this “recast” captures the classic combination of sentimentality and poignant realism we so often find in the literary bildungsroman. Perhaps we should read these two genres together more often. Is this what is making the new Jane Eyre film semi-successful? It is certainly something at work in the Great Expectations with Gwynnie and Ethan that most people hate.
